Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina
Phone calls and letters from lawyers
I was out of work a year ago and all my credit card depts are so far behind and cabt get caught up on all of them. Some I managed to get some current but the others I just don't have the resources to do so.Now I keep getting letters from lawyers demanding payment or there will be other actions taken. My question is what other actions could they be talking about?Could they garnish my wages, take me to court and lock me up or even have me put on death row?I ask this because thats the they make me feel. There making me uneasy.Thank you very much

What creditors can do was Re: Phone calls and letters from lawyers
You cannot be arrested or put in jail for not paying your bills. North Carolina does not allow your paycheck to be garnished if a creditor gets a judgment against you for unpaid credit card debts. The other actions they are talking about are filing a civil lawsuit against you and obtaining a judgment against you for the amount you owe.
I would suggest you go to a reputable credit counseling agency to have your situation reviewed specifically. United Family Services has an office in Charlotte you could call and they probably know an agency closer to you. The service is usually free and can be done by telephone in many circumstances. They will be able to explain the options available to you and help you make an informed decision. We are not allowed to post phone numbers here, otherwise, I would give you the phone number.
