Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina
Do I need to seek legal help?
I was contacted by a private number who asked for my wife. Person refused to give me name and/or number when I stated I have had same number for past 6 years. Person stated my wife listed my number as main contact number and he had no other numbers. Person then proceeded to call my wife twice. Person never gave name or company and stated my wife needed to call a 1-888 number about 12xxx89 case. Person stated he just serves summons and was not allowed to open package so he had no information besides what he stated. Person stated that if my wife called number he would not have to serve her with summons. I would like to know if this is legal since I was lied too and person would not leave a number or a name?

This sounds like a scam to me. Summons are served primarily by sheriff deputy in North Carolina. The "if she calls I will not have to serve her" is a big tip off. I would ignore and if the calls continue report them to law enforcement. If your wife ever applied for a payday loan, even if she never accepted the loan, this is a common scam run by foreign collection agencies that are very difficult to trace. One way to stop the calls is to set your phone to refuse all calls from private numbers.
