Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

Do I have to sign agreeing to judgement without court proceedings?

I am in default on a credit card & have been contacted by an attorney. I agreed to a payment plan over the phone, but was then told they are sending me a letter that I need to sign & have notorized that I agree to this ''judgement against me''. At that time, I told them I was not agreeing to anything until I saw the letter. Do I have to sign this to agree to their payment plan? I thought a judgement was only something they could get through civil court proceeding.

Yes - typically you would get a judgment through a court proceeding but you can sign and agree to a judgment prior to one and it will have the same effect. Sounds like you are signing one. You may want to have an attorney look over what they are sending you. You can try contacting a legal aid attorney and see if you qualify.
