Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

I went to a site to get quotes on auto insurance. I got several quotes but one company that quoted me wrote back that, by law, they had to inform me that they did a credit check and based their quote on that. I never gave them permission to do that. i thought it was illegal to do a credit check on someone without their permission. Is this correct?

Are you sure that you did not give permission to the insurer just by applying for a quote? Somewhere in the fine print at the website there may have been an authorization.
