Can a credit card company demand payment from a debt that occured in 1993? Should I have contact with these collection people?

Re: statute of limitations for North Carolina
It depends upon when you made your last payment. Generally, the statute of limitation runs 3 years on unpaid credit card debt. If you made any payments after the account went into default, you probably started the statute of limitation running all over again.
The exact statute of limitation would depend upon the terms of your card agreement and your payment history.
