can a tenant have room-mates with out landlord content, and have the other residers pay rent?

not usually. check your lease but standard lease clauses would require landlord's consent.

No, unless the lease gives permission for the tenant to sub-lease. Get permission in writing. Usually, the tenant who leased the premises is still personally liable for the full amount of the rent. So if your prospective roomie leaves, you are still on the hook.

If you are going to do this, you need to have something in writing with your room-mates. Assuming that your landlord will consent, you can see if he also will agree that you can only be responsible for your portion of the rent.
