Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

I work at a crisis ministry. A client bought a car in 1991. She couldn't make the payments so she let it go back. She received a bill today from a collection agency for $6000. They said they would take $600. The dealership is out of business. Is she obligated to pay?

When was her last payment? She may have a statute of limitations defense.
