Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

I am 16, and 3 years ago when i was visiting my grandmother, one of her friends had their grand daughter visiting too. We met and she is the same age. Ever since we met, we have talked through phones and facebook. She had always claimed to be molested, raped, living in a foster home, abused, and she said she had a child. A daughter, who died in November a year ago. I found out while visiting my grandmother yesterday that it was all untrue. What should i do. I want to report it to the police, because of the severity of the lies. Would the police have enough evidence? My friend also talked to her through all this. So she has messages too. What could happen? Would she be charged, or would anything happen to her? Or is it not even worth looking into?

I am not quite sure what you want to report.

If you are upset that you feel that your friend lied, unfortunately no crime as occured. Lying to people is not criminal. Your friend would have committed a crime if she reported false allegations to the police or child protective services.

If you feel that your friend really is in trouble and adults are covering it up, you may want to speak to another adult that you trust, someone liek the guidance counselor at your school. Allegations like these can be very dangerous, especially if false...or if they are true and the adults are able to cover it up, your friend may be further victimized and encouraged never to try and seek help when she is ready.

What? You heard all those things and chose not to report them at the time - presumably over the course of 3 years! Now that you have been told they are untrue, you want to report something that didn't happen or that you were possibly lied to? I believe your priorities are a bit out of order. Why don't you consider talking to a school or other counselor as to what may be be best course here because after all you don't really know anything other than what you have been told. It could certianly be the case that your friend is telling the truth and the person who told you she is lying could be covering up for someone.
