Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

In 1995 I was involved in an accident where I was driving someone else car. I have since been told that they had no insurance. I hit the car in front of me and bent the corner the cops said it was hit and run. I was arrested and let go. I went to my first court appearance and it was continued being in college when the second date came around school was out I went back home and never returned to school. I have to travel to North Carolina for a mandatory court apperance is it possible that I may be going to jail? Should I hire an attorney to go with me to court? I was 18 years old in 1995 when it happened.
