Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

My grandaughter has a pit bull that she advertised on craigs list to find a new home for a rehomeing fee. a young couple came to look at her dog and wanted to walk her dog down our dirt road to see how he would do away from the people he knew. my grandaughter agreed to let them do that. they left their car in my yard as they walked the dog away from our home. after about 15 mnutes the girl came walking back by herself and i thought she was coming up to me to ask me a question but she went straight for her car and jumped in her car and took off. the couple had stole my grandaughters dog.

i immediately called 911. the police arrived about 15 minutes later. we explained what happened and asked my grandaughter if she wanted to file a report and she agreed.

my question is once a report has been filed and a warrent for their arrest has been issued, they have actually arrested the female, i'm not sure if the male has been arrested yet. i would like to know can i drop the charges once it has went to trial. and if i can will their be any ramifacations against me for filling the charges and not going through with it.

please let me know as soon as possible.

thanks

You do not have the legal authority to drop criminal charges, only the District Attorney can do that. In many situations the prosecutor will honor your request, but that is up to the prosecutor.
