Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

Irecently got in severe financial trouble and got behind on my mortgage. I "borrowed" approximately $4,000 from my employer without asking and was trying to pay it back slowly. My conscious took me over and I confessed what I was doing. I have been suspended from my job pending further investigation as to what I actually took. I was advised to have the money back to them in a week or I could face prosecution. My question is, what kind of time am i looking at if it goes that far? I am a mother of two, wife, Christian person with good reputation, never even had so much as a speeding ticket. This was a poor, poor, decision on my part of how to handle financial distress. Please advise ... I reside in North Carolina.

Yeah, you didn't borrow - you stole and because you are an employee the particular kind of theft is called embezzlement. The amounts involved may amount to felony embezzlement. If your employer is giving you an opportunity to repay the money without pressing charges - take it. And remember, ones character is best determined in the face of adversity.
