Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

my son was charged with simple possesion. he did not go to his court date and now there is a warrant for him. this was five years ago and since then he has been clean, has a full time job, got married and now will be a father soon. he wants to put his past right, but he is scared if he turns himself in he will go to jail. what can he do..?
