Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

I was visiting a National Park in Virginia/Maryland where myself and others were lost and could not find our way. I saw this police on a horse and went over to ask for help and was told I was trespassing. There were construction around and no signs up visible. Myself and many others about 25 plus people were summon to court for trespassing/construction with no ordinance code. The fee was $100 but I dont want to pay it because I was not trespassing but went over to ask for help. Trying to get to Maryland park but somehow cross over on Virginia park side. Eveyone was upset. I took pictures and have recording of others complaining and upset about the charge as well as still trying to find their way. What does this mean "Misdemeanor or what exactly. I am currenty looking for a lawyer to fight it. I have not criminal record or any record. I am very upset about it all. HELP

Thanks
