Legal Question in Education Law in North Carolina

My university released information about me without my consent. Is this legal? The Housing office informed my fraternity that I had inquired about campus housing reassignment next semester. (I was interested in the process for finding me a new room if I disaffiliate from the organization.) I had repeatedly asked the housing staff in no uncertain terms NOT to let my fraternity know about my inquiry in any way, but today they emailed the group's president asking if I was going to disaffiliate. This creates a very awkward situation for me and I'm wondering if what they did is legal under student privacy laws. Thank you!

This would really be an internal school policy issue. You should speak to administration above the housing department to determine if school policies had been breached. There are rules that govern giving information to the outside world, but because you are dealing with a social organization that probably has ties to the housing department due to their act of housing students, those law would not apply.
