Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

I have a 14yr old son who legally has his fathers last name but has used my last name since he was 3 months old. We were never married and he has never contributed financially or contacted him or me since he was 3 months old. I do not know where he is and can not find him. How can I change his last name without using a lawyer?

Simply properly prepare and complete a Petition for a Name Change. Of course, if you don't know how to do that then you will most likely need a lawyer.
