Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

I don't know where to begin to start the first step(s) for a divorce in North Carolina. Got married in California 10 years ago, lived in NC for 9 years. Still living together. No children. Lots of joint debt with credit cards and student debt. Homeowner, both names on home. Please help.

The first step is to separate - you can never get divorced in NC still living together in the same house.
