Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

My brother would like to represent himself in a divorce case and wants to know if he can subpoena anybody for their testimony. When I looked up Subpoena it only stated that

1) Attorney

2) Court official

3) Jury

Would he not be acting as attorney in this case, since he is representing himself.
