Name Change

What steps do I need to take to change my son--name removed--name from his father--name removed--surname?

If you were married to the father, if his name is on the birth certificate, or if he has been found by a Judge to be the father, then you will have to have his permission to change the name. If none of the above is true, you probably will at least have to notify him at his last known address to let him know what you are doing so he can object if he wants to. This is what North Carolina law would probably require; check elsewhere if you are in another state.
