Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

Distributing assets

PLEASE HELP Me ON THIS SUBJECT. ME AND MY FIANCE HAVE BEEN LIVING TOGETHER IN NORTH CAROLINA FOR APPX. 5-6 YEARS. WE OWN A HOME TOGETHER FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS( WE ARE BOTH On THE DEED). I WANT TO LEAVE HER, BUT WE OWN PROPERTY TOGETHER AND WE HAVE ABOUT $35,000 EQUITY IN THE HOUSE. MY QUESTION IS HOW DO I GET MY HALF OF THE PROPERTY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HALF OF THE EQUITY. SHE TELLS ME THAT SHE WILL NOT GIVE ME HALF THE EQUITY IF I LEAVE AND WILL NOT TAKE A LOAN OUT TO GET IT EITHER. I AM REALLY STUMPED ON THIS AND CANNOT FIND ANY INFO ON IT BECAUSE WE ARE NOT MARRIED. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFO AT ALL VERY MUCH. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

GERALD

Re: Distributing assets

Since you are not married, you need to consult a real estate attorney, instead of a family law attorney. Feel free to email me privately and tell me what city you're in, and I'll be glad to refer you to someone.
