Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina
I am filing an uncontested divorce in NC. The documents I am preparing require a file number. How do I obtain a file number prior to filing?

You can't, you get the file number when you file. All official Court forms have this on them, the clerks simply fill it in when you file
If you are asking this question, you really should reconsider doing your own divorce because you clearly do not know what you are doing. And that is nothing to be ashamed of or insulted by. If my car breaks down, I go to a mechanic because I have no clue about what goes on under the hood and I don't want to damage my car tinkering around with things that I have no clue about. If your goal is to save money, there are several firms that can do your uncontested divorce for a flat rate fee of around $400 which includes your court cost and motion fees - oh, yeah, there's a motion and motion fees! You wouldn't need to go to court or even travel to the attorneys office. You'd sign one document in front of a notary and then kick back while your attorney does everything for you quickly, correctly and unless you are indigent and are taking advantage of the court waiving court cost, for most likely less than doing it yourself.
