Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

My husband and I have hired an attorney a year and a half ago to handle our custody case involving my step-daughter, the childs biological mother has not held up or proved herself in any way that she was directed to by our judge. Leading to the question regarding our attorney calling us a few days ago with no apparent reasoning but saying that she was dropping our case. Note that this attorney has been paid in full and I do have the original reciepts and contract my husband signed upon giving her the first payment. What can we do to go about handling this matter as well as resolving our custody matter?

Based on what you have said if the attorney dropped a paid in full case without completing the work then you are due a refund. Assuming you are not at fault for the attorney 'dropping' the case, I would suggest a full refund as this will inconvience you. If the attorney refuses just let them know you will file a griveance with the state bar. Most attorneys would much rather give a refund than deal with the bar. As to the remainder of your case - hire another attorney and enter into a more careful arrangement regarding payment of fees.
