Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

My husband and I have been seperated for a year and a half we have no papers filed, his brother -in-law whose is an attorney has sent me a notice saying saying I must remove my belonging from the storage building by july 22 or he will have them disoposed of. Can he legally do this we are still married and I have no where to move the belonging. Is the storage building still as much my property as it is his since papers no papers have been filed?
