Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina
international paternity law
Whilst I was single I dated a girl in Brazil. I did not know she was a prostitute at the time and she fell pregnant. 4 years later she has tracked me down. I am English temporarily living in the US. I do not want anything to do with her and did not after I found out what she did. Am I legally bound to child support under the circumstances?

Re: international paternity law
I am clueless since I know nothing about Brazilian
law and whether there is any way a Brazilian national
can gain authorization to pursue a child support
claim within the US. I would say that the fact
that the mother is an alleged prostitute is no
defense per se, but may give rise to doubts
regarding paternity. You may be able to insist on
a paternity test prior to any support order being
enforced. Whether you can then avoid even the test
could forestall enforcement. Certainly in US there
is no presumption at work against you since you
were not married and are not the "legal" father.
Good luck to you.
