Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

What does ''lay a foundation' refer to..?

In a child custody dispute, in attempting to introduce my ex's past drug convictions without a attorney I was told I couldn't without ''laying a foundation''. I do not have the money for representation, though my evidence of the drug usage is well documented. How do I ''lay a foundation' to get this entered into evidence?

You must be able to show how what you have is both relevant and "material" or ultimately deciding a critical issue in the case to have same admitted as evidence. You must show how the past drug convictions directly deal with your ex's ability as a parent, present a potential danger to the child as a result of the father's potential continued drug use, or present other facts that the convictions, or the conduct that brought them about, present an immediate danger to the child, and is against the child's best interests.
