Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

Legal gaurdian; grandchildren

Please advise; recently I have acquired the care of my two young grandchildren(one in 1st. grade). Our dghtr. left her husb. 2nd. to an abusive relationship. She is living with a female friend in NC and was unable to obtain work and pay for daycare and take 1 to school. So kids are now with us. Trying to get her to see that we must have legal gaurdianship; not custody...please forward info with reasoning so as to secure stability for the child that is currently in school here in Virginia. Her father has left NC, and is not providing any type of support for their care (very typical) Mom is trying to work and save cash to have kids come back home perhaps at end of semister or end of school year. In meantime; my husb. and I legally need to have kids secured and in stable environment and provide medical care for them, if needed. If I can obtain some type of document in layman's wording to email to my d'ghtr. with what she will need to do to accomplish this (hopefully with little fee to her) I'm praying she will understand I'm not asking her to give up custody of her children. If you and the children are in Virginia, you should be able to petition your local Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court (J&DRDC)for temporary guardianship of the children under the circumstances which you've described.
