If I put my childs father on the birth certificate what legal rights does he get?

Regardless of whether he is on the birth certificate, he has the same legal rights as you do - he can ask for custody and seek visitation. For the child's sake, he needs to legitimize the child and be a part of the child's life, regardless of his relationship with you.
