Being served with divorce papers

i currentlt am living in california but when i originally separated from my husband i was living with him in north carolina where we obtained a legal separation agreement. I have been on the west coast for over one year now and have decided to file for divorce using the attorney i used for the separation agreement in north carolina. now i am afraid that my husband is trying to serve me before he gets served.

my question is, is it possible for him to have me served through the mail instead of a personal service.
