Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

I am currently getting SSI for disability and am also the POA for my parents. I was told by my disability lawyer that this would not be a problem, though I have access to parents finances. My mother has been putting money in a bank account to then transfer to an Able account that was set up. She wanted me to put my name on the account also in case she would suddenly get sick or pass away and I would have immediate access to the funds. Will any of this cause a problem with the SSI or Medicaid that I currently get?

I am confused about the how this all works with the new Able Accounts. Thanks

Its hard to say. Rules for Medicaid and SSI change frequently and the workers who process cases and changes to cases are usually not attorneys and routinely screw things up. The bottom line is generally speaking if you have a access to funds that you could use for yourself, this will be a problem for both SSI and Medicaid however there are many exceptions. So it would be best to consult with a local attorney who practices in this area exclusively and who can go over your situation in more detail and advise you on what effect access to the Able Account will have. Best of luck.
