In the state of North Carolina, if I marry someone who has $30,000 in credit card debt, is there any way anyone could hold me liable/ responsible for paying that?

No. A husband is not liable for a wife's debts incurred before marriage and vice-a-versa. The only exception would be for debts for necessaries (like medical bills) incurred AFTER marriage.

Having a debt like this could be a problem though. It might be better for your intended spouse to file bankruptcy if he or she has other debts. In addition, having a debt like this may affect his ability to obtain a home loan. Encourage him/her to get this resolved.
