Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

Type Your Question Here...My husband has had many other women; he's now 82 and I question what will happpen when his will is read, and the other "group" of women are included. As far as I know, he's never gotten a divorce from me, and yet claims he has "married" these other women. Some claim to have special favor with state legal representatives. What would happen to me, should he die and these other women are made public in his will?

What would happen to me, should he die and these other women are made public in his will? Basically, it would likely be very awkward and embarrassing - other than that, we really need more information to properly answer your question. Specifically - we need to know what your current relationship status with him is - are you still living together (unbelievable if that's the case) are you separated? What's the deal? Not many women would put up with a husband allowing his girlfriends to lay up in the marital crib and claim they are 'married'. Anyhoo, here's the best I can do with the limited information you provided. You can be divorced and not know it -sometimes this happens legitimately sometimes fraudulently. If he obtained a divorce by fraud you could move to have that set aside, if you are successful any other 'marriages' would likely be void and like you have been told before, if you are still legally married you can potentially elected against a will that attempts to cut you out and insist on getting your 'elective share'. You will need an attorney to do this. As to knowing a 'state representative' - seriously? That's about as impressive as knowing the owner of your favorite restaurant and will have no impact on your situation. There are lots of other possible scenarios so you really need to consult with a local attorney or provide detailed information next time. Best of luck to you!
