Legal Question in Civil Litigation in North Carolina
I currently live in North Carolina and I purchased a vehicle from a guy who was dating my cousin. He got into some issues with the law and ran to Atlanta, Georgia where he is from. Well he left the title to the car, which is in my possession. The title was originally in his father's name, who passed away in 2009. His father turned the title over to him before he died and the guys signature and information are on the back of the title. Two months ago the guy got murdered and I am left with a title from Georgia with two dead men's name on it! What do i do? I need to get legal tags, registration and etc . for this car that I need! Please help!

What a mess. An estate will have to be probated for this man in the county whre the man reisded at the time of his death. The car is an asset of his estate. The alternative is to contact the Georgia DMV and see if they have any forms. Did the ma n actually sign the title over to you or just give it to you? If he signed the title, you may be able to use the Georgia forms to get a Georgia title. After you get the Georgia title, you can then register the vehicle in NC.
If the title and car were just given to you, then there will have to be a Georgia estate. You may be able to purchase the car from thre Georgia executor or administrator. They will be able to sign the title to you. You may still have to get this recorded in Georgia and then NC. You might want to check with your NC DMV title office to see if you obtain valid possession whether you can directly record the Georgia documents or must first get a Georgia title in your name.
