You should never have bought a car from Craig's list without first getting a CarFax report on the vehicle and in failing to have it inspected by an independent mechanic BEFORE you bought it.

Even though the title was not in your name, did you get the title, take possession of the car and do a bill of sale? If you have those things, then the car is yours. If you did not pay any money, do not have the title or the car, then tell the guy to forget it. You can refuse to pick up the car, but you are going to have a very difficult time getting your money back.
