Legal Question in Civil Litigation in North Carolina

unmarried couple shared home together, one party left the state for employment o

I purchased a home in NC with fiance, moved there from PA and lived together for less than 1 year. I brought with me several rooms of furnishings, and also purchased several rooms worth when I arrived there with my own money. Things werent working out between us and since he would not leave, and I recieved a job opportunity back in Pennsylvania, I left with just what I could fit in my car. He told me he would put my things in storage, but is now refusing to disclose the location of my property. The house has since gone into foreclosure, so I am concerned that he may leave it in the house. A neighbor did see him loading a moving truck, however, but I cannot be sure what remains in the house, or where he did move the property to. I believe he may have sold it. How can I go about finding it, and what recourse do I have if I never find out what he did with it? Also, if it is a case for the courts, could I handle it through PA courts, or NC? Is this a civil case or a criminal case? In which state would I secure an attorney? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, you will need to consult a North Carolina attorney to handle this matter. As everything occurred in NC, their courts would have jurisdiction. You should contact the NC Bar Association for a referral.

Since everything occurred in NC you would have to handle things in NC. This would be a civil case. You will likely have to contend with: Abandonment-will he raise this issue? How long ago did you leave NC? Agreement as to store your items. Did he agree to do so? How much was he to charge? How long? Proof that you brought these items into the relationship. I may have an cheaper solution to outright retaining an attorney at this point in time. If you are interested in obtaining access to legal advice for this and any other issues that may arise without the need to pay out big bucks first, please e-mail me and I will send information out to you.

Either way, I wish you good luck.
