Legal Question in Intellectual Property in North Carolina

Contract for writing partner

A friend and and I are writing together but need to have some legal structure to protect the project. Is there a simple free template for such projects? Since it is unclear what direction this will take, we don't want to spend a lot on it, but ideas still need protecting. Additionally I'm in North Carolina the other in Virginia.

Re: Contract for writing partner

You need a partnership agreement, which spells out rights and obligations, and esp. covers (c) issues.

No such "template" exists. It's like asking if there is a "template" for writing a novel.

Re: Contract for writing partner

You're wise to seek to structure your writing project with a contract now, while you're still friends. You're also in luck.

The governing law of copyright (which protects works of authorship) is federal, so the state in which the writing takes place is immaterial, as long as the writing takes place in the United States.

You get what you pay for with "free" templates. I suggest you go together to an intellectual property attorney who can handle this matter for you. Follow the attorney's advice as to which state law shall govern the contract.
