Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina
Not sure if I have a case or not. I moved into a new apartment, paid the pet deposit, security deposit, fees and etc. Two weeks after moving in I was informed that I had to move out after my one year lease due to them becoming a student only apartment complex. I was told I could not get out of my lease or get any of my money back for anything. Had I known this I would have never moved into this apartment complex. Their response was just sorry they didn't know they were going to become student based only. This doesn't seem fair and like some form of discrimination. Now after my lease I will have to find another place to live and repay an all new pet deposit, credit check application fee, administration fees and security deposit. Does this seem fair?

Unfortunately, there is no case based on what you posted here. One of the downsides of renting is that the home is never permanent and with proper notice either party can end the relationship. Look at your lease and determine what the notice provision is for them to tell you to leave or for you to leave after the lease is over. It is likely 30 or 60 days. Here they have you an 11 months notice that they would not renew the lease. They could have probably given you must less (based on the terms of the lease).
This applies to any apartment complex you go to. If you want to stay at an apartment complex long term, you need to sign a long term lease, otherwise the same thing can happen anywhere you go.
