Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina

I have never gotten a copy of my lease. My landlord has changed how much I owe several times, demanding more money than I can give. I told her I could not afford what she wanted and that if she would return the money I gave her today (I have been in this place for 11 days and paid $1500 for $1100 a month), I would move out tomorrow so that she can re-rent the place. She went ballistic and informed me I cannot move out, I must pay her everything I owe, plus next months rent. She called later to tell me that I owe her the money by the first, and that she is going to sue me for any damages to the house since I have moved in. What are my rights and options? I have received no receipts for the moneys given, no copy of the lease.

Unfortunately, you have a faily dire situation on your hands. NEVER sign a contract or pay money without geting a reciept. Whatever lease you did sign may or may not be the lease that shows up in Court.

You may need to sit down with an attorney and I recommend you contact Legal Aid of NC to see if they can assist you. You best best may be to walk away and just deal with whatever lawsuit she files...Next time get a copy of your lease and don't make any payments without gettign a reciept. But speak to a lawyer.
