Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina
We just rented a home in North Carolina. We didn't sign a lease stating no pets. The landlord was informed that we had outside cats prior to our renting the house. She said as long as they were not inside that it was fine (we have a witness that was there when she said it). Here we are three months later (rented in Sept. but moved at the end of Oct.) and she tells us we have to get rid of them or pay a $500.00 deposit. Is this legal and can she evict us if we do not pay it? Do we have any legal rights in this case?

If there is nothing in the lease that states no pets, you probably have a stronger case than the landlord. Of course, the landlord might not renew the lease or require the deposit next year if you were planning to stay there.
