Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina

I'm trying to have my security deposit returned to me. The landlord has been non responsive. my lease expired 12/8/13. I sent a security deposit demand letter to him on 1/1/14 requesting my deposit to be returned in seven days. He then responded saying he was out of the country and hadn't checked the condo since I've moved out. Is being out of the country a valid reason for not returning my deposit with in 30 daysas required by NC law?

No it is not, but based on your inquiry, 30 days hasn't passed yet. It won't pass until the 7th of January.
