Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina

No Written Lease Agreement

I lived in house for a year and a half with no written lease. We agreed on monthly rent and that was it. I recently moved out and the landlord is trying to have me pay for damages that, for the most part, were there when i moved in. With out a lease what are my options. Do i have to pay or can i just forget about. Thanks in advance.
