Legal Question in Personal Injury in North Carolina
Auto Accident
I was in an accident on Saturday. There was no damage to the person's car and I gave my name an phone number. 3-4 days later the person calls me to tell me they are not feeling well am I responsible for the medical bill. Also, if the customer has insurance, do I just need to pay the copayment? How can I know if the person is telling the truth about if they have health insurance or not.

Re: Auto Accident
Generally speaking, you would turn the matter over to your insurance company (i.e. company providing you with automobile liability insurance) to handle. Your insurer would then make decisions as to how much (if any) to pay this person. Some people try to handle (settle) such matters without reporting the incident to their insurer, to keep their insurance rates down; this is not always necessary. If the other person had insurance covering some or all of their bills, then generally you would still be liable for all of their bills. As for whether the other person is telling the truth, there's no great way to know. Persons with experience in this area have ways of trying to determine this, but there's no absolute science there. You may want to consult an attorney, or refer the matter to your insurance company; or you may try to settle with this person yourself.
