Legal Question in Product Liability in North Carolina

I had a external hard drive at a friend's house the was taken by the sheriff department do to a search warrant for possession of child pornography. It was said that it was on a flash drive. The external hard drive was taken December 2011, and I called the Sheriff department several times but they say that I would have to wait until the case. But my friend was never brought in on those charges and it will be almost two years since they took his stuff, his wife stuff, and my external hard drive. What can I do about this situation?

Call an attorney. 1. Either you need help getting your item back, or 2. you will need help with a criminal prosecution if something was put on the hard drive without your knowledge
