Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Carolina

I applied for a student housing apartment and signed the lease but later i was told that i was denied and needed a co-signer. I didn't have a co-signer so I moved in a different place but three months later I get a letter from the leasing company saying I own 1500 dollars. Can I fight this? I never moved in or payed a cent

You can fight it depending on the terms of the lease. If the co-signor was made a condition precedent, meaning the contract was void if you didn't get one, then there was no contract. But it depends on how it was worded.
