Hi. In North Carolina, if someone furnishes materials or labor on your real property and you do not pay them, they are entitled to a lien on your property. They can't just "say" they have a lien though, they have to file paperwork with the court in the county where the property is located, and they have to provide you with a copy. They have to file it within 120 days after they do the work. If you still do not pay after the lien is filed, they have until 180 days after the last day they did work to file a lawsuit to collect on the lien.

If for some reason you do not owe them any money, you can assert that as a defense against the lien. If they actually have a lien, you should consult an attorney in your area to assist you with this matter.

An attorney would have to review the agreement and documents and determine if they did. Depending on who signed, it is possible.
