Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Carolina

Man is involved with a group that rents property. The man stores a bike trailer on the property. He then leaves the group. The trailer remains on the property for about a year. Man tries to reclaim the trailer. The trailer was traded by the group for work to the property. What is the legal rights of the group regarding the trailer.

None. If he pursue criminal charges, its larceny (theft). if the police will not mess with this, then he can sue civilly for conversion.

The group was not privileged to appropriate private property belonging to someone else and trade it. There was a procedure for dealing with the trailer and they did not follow it. Can the trailer be returned to the man? If so, then return it. If not. pay the man for the value of the trailer and get him to sign a release.

Caution - you may have left other details out of this and my advice could change if other circumstances are made known such as did the group ever try to contact the man in writing? Why did he leave the trailer at the property?
