Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Carolina
what are my rights?
My deceased husband and I and built a home back in 1980 with a portion of his trust fund from his grandfather, and his Dad helped with the rest of the money. . The home was built on a large piece of property that his parents owned. We lived there for 25 years and it has always been in his parent's names. They verbally told us the home was ours. When my husband passed away back in 2003, I tried to buy the home. They continued telling me they were going to put the home in my 2 childrens names and would not sell to me. They never have put in theirs names period. Last year I remarried and bought a home. My question is:I have put around $25,000 in this home over the past 10 years, thinking it was my home, (they always, refer to it as mine and the kids home) or be my childrens home. Is there anything I can do to get my money that I have invested, out of this? 2 years ago I put in a new heat pump and hot water heater and built a sunroom. They have no intentions of giving this home to my children who are 18 and 22 years old. I want my money out of it. what can I do, Do I have any rights-squatters rights, etc. I have cancelled checks and receipts for the work I have done over the years. Thanks for your help!

Re: what are my rights?
You may have some rights to recoup the money you put in under theories such as unjust enrichment. I would consult with a litigation attorney in your area as soon as possible in case there are statute of limitations that will run (if they haven't already).
