Traffic ticket

I got into an accident and rear-ended someone. I got a ticket for improper brakes. How should I plea in court and what are the possible consequences? I was told that if

I brought a letter from the insurance company saying they paid for the damages, the charges would be dropped. Are traffic violations considered a criminal offense?

The ticket will generally be dropped if you bring a letter from yourinsurance company.
