Legal Question in Traffic Law in North Carolina
Worth Requesting A Waiver?
While moving my daughter from Virginia to North Carolina to attend college, I hit a parked vehicle with the moving van while negotiating a parking lot. In a moment of very poor judgement I left the scene (long story, but it had nothing to do with escaping). I returned to the scene within 20 minutes and took responsibility for what happened. I was charged with violation of GS 20-166(c) and 141(m) and told I must appear in court a month from now.
For a number of reasons - not least of which I returned and owned up to everything - I would prefer to simply plead to what I did and avoid the cost and inconvenience of driving down to North Carolina, missing work I can't afford to miss, using vacation to protect my paycheck, etc.
Is there any point to writing the District Attorney's office to avoid all of this? If the answer is 'fat chance', what can I expect by way of penalties/fines?
Thank you for your help.

Re: Worth Requesting A Waiver?
It may depend on the County, but I don't think writing or calling the DA will usually do any good. If you are in Virginia, it may be worth it to speak with an attorney in the County you got the ticket. He or she may be able to get it dismissed, or plead it down and you wouldn't have to appear.
