Determining Next-Of-Kin When No Will

If a person has no will, no spouse, deceased parents and deceased siblings, but does have living aunts, uncles, cousins and sister-in-law; how would their estate be divided or would the State of NC take possession of the estate?

It will not go to the state in that situation. It would first go to any nephews or nieces, but would not go to the sister-in-law. If no nieces and nephews, then you are looking at the grandaprents, and then aunts and uncles and their descendants
