Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in North Carolina
The lady that used to live in the house we live in, passed away, and we bought the house after it was foreclosed on. This lady has received checks since then; how do I find the right people to give them these checks?

I appreciate your honesty and integrity. You can check the Clerk of Court to see if a probate file was opened, which would list the executor. As a back up you can check with the County Register of Deeds to see the live birth records to see if this person is listed as the mother of a still living person.
You can try to do the things suggested by Attorney Love. However, if there is no estate that is probated, you do not have to be a detective and try to find this lady's closest living relative. Simply write on the envelope "return to sender - addressee deceased" and drop in the mail. The sender will eventually be required to turn any unclaimed money over to the state treasurer. Any relations of the woman who do surface can then contact the treasurer or the company which sent the checks.
