What is the statue of limitations on an insurance claim for a death?

Statutes of limitation do not normally apply to insurance claims but the insurance policy(the contract) on which such a claim is based may have a provision which requires that a claim for a death benefit be submitted to the insurance carrier for payment within a certain period of time after the insured's decease or it may be forfeited.
